Coursework conditions

Task-specific instructions

UQ classifies assessment tasks as Secure or Open from Semester 2, 2026. Task instructions still specify permitted materials and tools, including any AI-use and disclosure requirements. An AI-required condition applies when students are assessed on their use of AI.

Official source ↗

Exams

Check the exact task

The reviewed UQ guidance applies its Secure/Open classifications at assessment-task level. It does not establish one blanket rule for every exam; check the examination and task instructions.

Official source ↗

Disclosure

Context and task matter

ITALI guidance links disclosure to relevance and task requirements; Library guidance gives broader acknowledgement advice. Keep their scopes distinct and follow the course and assessment directions.

Official source ↗

Privacy and data

Scope-specific safeguards

UQ research guidance cautions against sharing sensitive or confidential research data with public AI tools. Staff Copilot Chat prompts, responses and uploaded files are retained under distinct Microsoft 365 storage and retention arrangements; the source gives no retention period.

Official source ↗

Tools and access

Access is not assessment permission

UQ provides Copilot Chat to staff and students through UQ Microsoft 365 at no additional cost. Paid Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on licences are separate. Tool availability does not decide whether a task permits AI.

Official source ↗

Research and publication

Research context applies

Researcher Hub guidance addresses disclosure, data sensitivity and use of AI services in research scenarios. The captured sources do not establish a complete rule set for every thesis, publication or research project.

Academic integrity and formal proceedings

Keep conditions and procedure distinct

UQ describes AI outputs used without attribution and contrary to staff directions as plagiarism and academic misconduct. Its formal student misconduct procedure sets hearing, decision, penalty and appeal safeguards; it is a general procedure, not an AI-specific rule.

Official source ↗

Teaching guidance

Task-specific human direction

UQ course coordinators provide assessment guidance through course profiles. From Semester 2, 2026 Secure/Open task text is standardized, while teaching staff still specify the permitted tools, materials and disclosure conditions.

Official source ↗

Security and procurement

Use-case and data scope matter

UQ research guidance distinguishes public tools from UQ Microsoft 365 services, discusses data-classification limits, and directs staff to ICT procurement advice before subscribing. These controls do not create assessment permission.

The University of Queensland

This local guide covers UQ coursework directions, academic integrity and a formal student misconduct procedure. Staff research and service-procurement guidance has a separate scope.

Investigation & response

For a formal UQ student misconduct proceeding, the scheduled hearing follows at least 10 business days after the allegation notice and document bundle are provided to the student. An oral hearing occurs only if requested, and a student may bring a support person. A student is not entitled to a lawyer or representative unless the Misconduct Body chair gives prior written approval. The Body will endeavour to decide within 20 business days after the notice and bundle are provided; this is an endeavour, not a fixed deadline.

An appeal of a Misconduct Body penalty ordinarily suspends implementation, unless the body directs implementation despite appeal. A student may ask the Appeal Body chair to stay such a direction; the chair must consider that request urgently.
