Coursework

Follow course syllabus policy

SNU's AI Guidelines do not impose uniform coursework bans. Under Chapter 2 §2(1)–(2), instructors should determine permitted and prohibited AI use and reporting methods according to course nature and should clearly state them in syllabi. Under §2(5)–(6), students must review and comply with syllabus policies, must report AI use when required, and bear final responsibility for their work. Campus ChatGPT Edu or Codex access does not grant coursework permission.

Official source ↗

Exams

Restricted unless course policy permits

Under Chapter 2 §2(3), except where AI use is explicitly permitted under course policies, instructors should take care to prevent students from gaining unfair advantages in assignments or examinations through improper AI use, while understanding the limitations and imperfections of AI detection tools. Under §2(7), using AI in ways prohibited by the instructor may be deemed an academic ethics violation and may result in academic or disciplinary disadvantages.

Official source ↗

Disclosure

Report when required; research rules conditional

Members should share and appropriately acknowledge AI use to the extent possible (§1(1)). For coursework, students must report AI use in the prescribed manner when required by the instructor's syllabus policy (§2(5)). For research and scholarly writing, directly incorporating AI outputs without modification may violate field research integrity standards (§3(3)); under §3(3) Footnote 1, using AI solely for foreign-language expression correction or grammatical review does not in itself constitute research misconduct merely because it is undisclosed, provided that it does not violate the policies of funding agencies, affiliated institutions, academic societies, or scholarly journals (research-only rule, not a coursework exception).

Official source ↗

Privacy & sensitive data

Prevent leakage & observe license rules

Members must comply with copyright, privacy, and information security laws and University rules, ensuring prompts and inputs do not include personal information, copyrighted works, or rights-infringing content (§1(3)). In research, researchers must take care to prevent leakage of sensitive research information (R&D plans, research data, project information, and researcher personal data), should not unnecessarily enter or share research data or confidential information with AI tools (§3(4)), and must strictly observe research security laws. Separately, SNU Central Library warns that uploading subscribed e-resources to AI services or bulk scraping violates publisher license terms.

Approved tools

ChatGPT Edu & Codex (eligibility applies)

SNU provides ChatGPT Edu (with Codex software development support) from June 2026 to August 2027 (15 months) for currently enrolled students and employed faculty/researchers via batch registration, and administrative staff by individual application (members on academic or employment leave (휴학·휴직) are excluded; affiliated school teachers receive ChatGPT Plus by application). The SNU press release states ChatGPT Edu is free of charge for students and excludes user input/output data from model training; accounts inactive for 3+ months are recalled. Tool availability does not authorize coursework or exam use.

Official source ↗

Research & publication

Human-led research & cross-validation

Under Chapter 2 §3, researchers must review and cross-validate AI outputs against literature, experiments, and expert judgment (§3(2)); must lead core research design and interpretation rather than replacing scholarly judgment with AI (§3(6)); should record prompts, versions, model names, and scope to the extent possible for reproducibility (§3(5)); and must review and comply in advance with policies of funding agencies, affiliated institutions, academic societies, and scholarly journals (§3(7)). Under §3(3) Footnote 1, foreign-language expression or grammar editing without explicit disclosure does not in itself constitute research misconduct only provided those external/institutional policies are not violated. SNU Library also cites COPE rules that AI cannot be listed as an author.

Academic integrity

May be deemed ethics violation (§2(7))

Members bear full responsibility for submitted outputs (§1(6)) and should verify facts and sources (§1(2)). Under Chapter 2 §2(7), using AI in ways prohibited by the instructor may be deemed a violation of academic ethics (학습 윤리 위반으로 인정되어) and may result in academic or disciplinary disadvantages (불이익을 받을 수 있음), without establishing an automatic finding or sanction. Under §2(3), instructors should understand the limitations and imperfections of AI detection tools (no sole-evidence prohibition is stated). In research, unedited direct incorporation of AI output may violate field research integrity standards (§3(3)), and COPE guidance cited by the Library bars AI authorship.

Official source ↗

Teaching guidance

Syllabus clarity & avoid exclusive AI grading (SHOULD)

Under Chapter 2 §2(1)–(4) and §2(8)–(9), all instructor and university teaching provisions use normative SHOULD recommendations: instructors should determine permitted/prohibited AI scope and reporting rules according to course nature (§2(1)), should clearly state and communicate policies in syllabi (§2(2)), should understand AI detection tool limitations and imperfections (§2(3)), and should avoid relying exclusively on AI when evaluating student performance (Korean: 지양한다, §2(4), not an absolute ban). The University should provide guidance/resources for syllabus policies (§2(8)) and should institutionally support alternative teaching and assessment methods not reliant on AI detection tools (§2(9), institutional recommendation SHOULD, not an individual student entitlement).

Official source ↗

Security and procurement

Non-training workspace & e-resource licenses

SNU's ChatGPT Edu deployment provides a high-security workspace where user input/output data are not used for model training. For subscribed electronic resources, SNU Central Library enforces publisher license contracts: uploading full text to commercial AI services or using automated scraping tools/robots via DOIs is prohibited regardless of copyright fair use, and repeated breaches may trigger university-wide access suspension, fee increases, and sanctions under Central Library Enforcement Rules Article 24. Internal IT vendor procurement review criteria were not independently established in the reviewed sources.

  • Do not use AI in violation of instructor restrictions; it may be deemed an ethics violation and may result in disadvantages (§2(7)).

AI use questioned?

Seoul National University

SNU's AI Guidelines (enacted Jan. 1, 2026) set voluntary principles: instructors should state course AI rules in syllabi (§2(1)–(2)) and students must comply and report when required (§2(5)). Campus ChatGPT Edu or Codex access is not assessment permission; research language-editing (§3(3) Footnote 1), research data protection (§3(4)), and Library e-resource licenses have specific conditions.
