Strict Data Protection & Exam Question Caution

Under official faculty guidance and student notices, students and faculty are cautioned against information leakage: students must never input confidential information, personal data, or unpublished research results into AI tools due to potential leakage or model training use, and faculty are instructed that examination questions, being highly confidential documents, must basically (基本的に) not be input into language-generating AI in unchanged form. The separate 'Security Guidelines for Generative AI Use' (March 12, 2024) require internal UTokyo Account authentication and are held as an unverified private source.

Campus AI Tools & Protection

Commercial Data Protection (No Inherent Assessment Permission)

U-Tokyo provides Google Gemini (via ECCS Cloud Email / Google Workspace) and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (via UTokyo Account) to university members with commercial data protection enabled. Zoom AI Companion is available under U-Tokyo Zoom licenses, and Slack AI is available in UTokyo Slack. Gemini for Google Workspace is available to users with Education Plus licenses. Tool licensing and data protection provide institutional account security, but NEVER confer permission to use tools in coursework or examinations, which is governed exclusively by instructor assignment instructions (T0–T5/Other).

Rule 79 Investigation Framework (In-Principle Clocks)

Under Rule No. 79 (東京大学科学研究行動規範委員会規則), formal scientific research misconduct investigations establish procedural timelines qualified in principle (原則として): the preliminary inquiry results must be reported to the Committee Chair in principle within 30 days of receiving an allegation (Art. 8(5)); the Investigation Committee commences formal investigation in principle within 30 days of the decision to investigate (Art. 9(2)); the Committee makes its adjudication determination in principle within 150 days of starting formal investigation (Art. 11(1)); respondent defense opportunity is granted in principle within 14 days of receiving draft determination notification (Art. 11(7)); and a respondent against whom misconduct was determined may file an objection/appeal to the Committee Chair in principle within 30 days of receiving the determination notice under Art. 11(11) (Art. 12(1)). The Code of Conduct for Research mandates transparent scientific basis and prohibits fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism. These clocks apply exclusively to scientific research misconduct proceedings and do not govern undergraduate or generic coursework discipline.

Can I upload sensitive data?

Which tools can I access?

U-Tokyo provides Google Gemini (via ECCS Cloud Email / Google Workspace) and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (via UTokyo Account) to university members with commercial data protection enabled. Zoom AI Companion is available under U-Tokyo Zoom licenses, and Slack AI is available in UTokyo Slack. Gemini for Google Workspace is available to users with Education Plus licenses. Tool licensing and data protection provide institutional account security, but NEVER confer permission to use tools in coursework or examinations, which is governed exclusively by instructor assignment instructions (T0–T5/Other).

What are the examination rules?

Follow the instructor’s explicit rules for each examination or test. The reviewed sources establish instructor discretion, not a university-wide written-authorization default. Faculty are advised basically (基本的に) not to input examination questions into language-generating AI in unchanged form because of confidentiality.

What rules apply to research and publication?

Under Rule No. 79 (東京大学科学研究行動規範委員会規則), formal scientific research misconduct investigations establish procedural timelines qualified in principle (原則として): the preliminary inquiry results must be reported to the Committee Chair in principle within 30 days of receiving an allegation (Art. 8(5)); the Investigation Committee commences formal investigation in principle within 30 days of the decision to investigate (Art. 9(2)); the Committee makes its adjudication determination in principle within 150 days of starting formal investigation (Art. 11(1)); respondent defense opportunity is granted in principle within 14 days of receiving draft determination notification (Art. 11(7)); and a respondent against whom misconduct was determined may file an objection/appeal to the Committee Chair in principle within 30 days of receiving the determination notice under Art. 11(11) (Art. 12(1)). The Code of Conduct for Research mandates transparent scientific basis and prohibits fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism. These clocks apply exclusively to scientific research misconduct proceedings and do not govern undergraduate or generic coursework discipline.

What counts as academic misconduct?

Do not present AI-generated work as your own. Faculty guidance says simply copying and pasting AI answers should not be accepted even where AI use is allowed. The reviewed sources do not establish a complete coursework investigation, penalty or appeal process; the gap remains open. Rule No.79 covers scientific research misconduct separately, with in-principle clocks; it must not supply coursework disciplinary steps.

What guidance applies to teaching?

UTokyo leaves decisions on AI tool use in individual classes to faculty to maximize educational effectiveness. Faculty are advised to test past assignments and exams with generative AI tools. Ahead of the 2026 Autumn Semester (effective September 29, 2026), setting "Permitted AI Use" is mandatory for assignments created within UTOL (UTokyo LMS), requiring selection of a standardized range label (T0 No AI Use, T1 questions/research only, T2 discussion/idea-bouncing, T3 feedback, T4 drafting, T5 creative use) or "Other" with explanatory text. Instructors are advised not to rely too heavily on tools that claim to detect whether text was generated by AI, and are officially recommended to have students specify which generative AI tools were used when submitting reports.
