Coursework

Conditionally allowed

Follow the assessment brief. Category 1 excludes GenAI during completion; Category 2 allows limited, critical assistance while the student remains the author; Category 3 makes GenAI integral. The categories are guidance. Language support has assessed-skill and substantive-content exceptions.

Exams

Assessment-specific

Exam permissions follow the assessment brief. In-person exams, tests and vivas are examples of Category 1, not a universal default. CLIE oral/invigilated assessments are Category 1 unless otherwise stated. Individual assistive exemptions must be clarified.

Disclosure

Acknowledgement required

Acknowledgement is required whenever GenAI has been used as a functional tool to assist in creating academic work (drafting, planning, structuring). Minimum acknowledgement requires tool name/version, publisher, URL, and single-sentence context. Where required by standard referencing styles (APA, Chicago) or departmental guidelines, the GenAI tool may be cited as an author in addition to functional acknowledgement.

Privacy & sensitive data

Check source-specific conditions

The March 2024 Copilot announcement describes data protection under UCL login and advises caution; it does not verify current account retention settings. Students must respect UCL data-protection requirements when using sensitive data; approvals/consents may be required.

Approved tools

Access subject to conditions

UCL endorses Copilot and Studiosity. Studiosity provides 24/7 unlimited writing/referencing feedback via Moodle and says student work is not used to train its AI. Its privacy notice includes retained service content and overseas processing. Access is not assessment permission.

Research & publication

Publisher and degree-specific

Doctoral candidates disclose functional external contributions, retain responsibility and answer viva questions without AI support. UCL Press has separate book/journal authorship, disclosure and image rules; journal methodology exceptions and book-versus-journal reviewer obligations differ.

Investigation & response

For an Investigatory Viva, the Secretary must supply the invitation, report and evidence at least five working days beforehand. Attendance is mandatory and the viva cannot be held in the student’s absence. Organisation should occur within 20 working days of the Stage 1 outcome unless reasonable circumstances prevent this. Stage 3 appeals must be submitted within 10 working days of receiving formal notification. Outcomes are normally issued within 20 working days after eligibility notification, with recommendations subject to Exam Board confirmation.

16. Where a student fails to attend a Viva, they may be referred to the Mandatory Faculty Interview process for a meeting with the Faculty. The purpose of the meeting is to outline the importance of engagement with the Academic Misconduct process. Following this meeting, the student will be sent a new date, time, and location of the rescheduled Viva. Alternatively, where the allegation is Minor and the student accepts the allegation, the Department may apply a penalty in line with Section 6.

      Questions students ask

      Questions students ask

Can I use AI for my coursework?

Follow the assessment brief. Category 1 excludes GenAI during completion; Category 2 allows limited, critical assistance while the student remains the author; Category 3 makes GenAI integral. The categories are guidance. Language support has assessed-skill and substantive-content exceptions.

      View evidence →
Do I need to disclose AI use?

Acknowledgement is required whenever GenAI has been used as a functional tool to assist in creating academic work (drafting, planning, structuring). Minimum acknowledgement requires tool name/version, publisher, URL, and single-sentence context. Where required by standard referencing styles (APA, Chicago) or departmental guidelines, the GenAI tool may be cited as an author in addition to functional acknowledgement.

      View evidence →
      Can I upload sensitive data?

The March 2024 Copilot announcement describes data protection under UCL login and advises caution; it does not verify current account retention settings. Students must respect UCL data-protection requirements when using sensitive data; approvals/consents may be required.

      View evidence →
      Which tools can I access?

UCL endorses Copilot and Studiosity. Studiosity provides 24/7 unlimited writing/referencing feedback via Moodle and says student work is not used to train its AI. Its privacy notice includes retained service content and overseas processing. Access is not assessment permission.
