Academic integrity

Restricted in stated scope

The Code explicitly covers unauthorized AI and fabricated citations. Findings require clear and convincing evidence; notice, response and review stages apply. Accepting Responsibility is voluntary and waives ordinary appeals. CTI discourages unreliable detectors; no detector score or AI use alone establishes guilt or an automatic sanction. Announced in-person Ithaca/Tech implementation scope and internal Registry records, disclosure limits and no-violation expungement must also be checked.

Guidance; specific rules may apply

Communicate course and assignment AI rules clearly. Instructors choose the permitted scope. The 2023 committee does not recommend AI summative grading; this is guidance, not a universal disciplinary prohibition.

Cornell does not recommend using automatic AI detection algorithms for academic integrity violations, citing their unreliability and inability to provide definitive evidence, and the risk of wrongly accusing students.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that detection technologies will provide a workable solution to this problem. It can be very difficult to accurately detect AI-generated content. Although some instructors have reported that the tone and feel of AI-generated content is different from the student work they normally receive, in some cases it is almost undetectable from the work produced by students. Detection tools claim to identify work as AI generated, but cannot provide evidence for that claim, and tests have revealed significant margins of error. This raises a substantial risk that students may be wrongly accused of improper use of generative AI. For a more in-depth look at

the reliability of detection technologies, we recommend the article " How Reliable are AI Detectors? Claims Versus Reality. The Accepting Responsibility process does not result in a finding of guilt under the Code of Academic Integrity. In that sense, the process is akin to a warning. Questions students ask

          Questions students ask

Can I use AI for my coursework?

AI assistance in coursework must be explicitly permitted by the instructor. Check the assignment rules; sample AI-FREE/AS-UA policies and tool listings do not grant permission in other courses.

          View evidence →
Do I need to disclose AI use?

The undergraduate guide requires attribution when AI use is permitted, including quoting verbatim output and acknowledging paraphrases under instructor rules. Communication PhD A/B work separately requires disclosure of AI-assisted language/grammar changes and committee discussion.

          View evidence →
          Can I upload sensitive data?

Do not put confidential, proprietary, regulated or sensitive Cornell data into public AI. The committee report's training-data warning concerns third-party services; approved platforms have product-specific limits. Copilot Basic is Low Risk only; the limited AI Platform pilot lists Moderate Risk and below.

          View evidence →
          Which tools can I access?

Firefly needs an Adobe licence; Cornell AI Platform is a limited free pilot; Copilot Basic is free for eligible affiliates aged 18+ with Low Risk data. Zoom AI Companion security/privacy are still being evaluated in the Hub entry. Tool access is not assessment permission.

          View evidence →
          What are the examination rules?

The current Code prohibits unauthorized AI assistance in exams and restricts in-class assistance to what the exam or proctor provides. Understand the exact assessment conditions. Earlier courses and graduate/honor-code procedures have separate rules.

          View evidence →
What rules apply to research and publication?

The 2023 research task-force report is non-binding advice. Communication PhD A/B exam papers/dissertations have specific AI drafting restrictions and disclosure/committee requirements; these are not a Cornell-wide thesis ban. Check applicable research, IRB, sponsor and publication requirements separately.

          View evidence →
          What counts as academic misconduct?

The Code explicitly covers unauthorized AI and fabricated citations. Findings require clear and convincing evidence; notice, response and review stages apply. Accepting Responsibility is voluntary and waives ordinary appeals. CTI discourages unreliable detectors; no detector score or AI use alone establishes guilt or an automatic sanction. Announced in-person Ithaca/Tech implementation scope and internal Registry records, disclosure limits and no-violation expungement must also be checked.

          View evidence →
          What guidance applies to teaching?

Communicate course and assignment AI rules clearly. Instructors choose the permitted scope. The 2023 committee does not recommend AI summative grading; this is guidance, not a universal disciplinary prohibition.

          View evidence →
What security and procurement requirements apply?

Public AI cannot receive sensitive Cornell data. IT requires administrative AI use to comply with its administration guidance; approved/local tools and data classifications require separate checks. The research report alone is not procurement approval.
