Guidelines for Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) at NMBU
Chapter 1. Use of AI-based programs at NMBU
At NMBU, the use of AI-based programs is permitted in accordance with these guidelines.
In the online course description for each individual course, it may be stated that AI-based programs are not permitted for use in exams or in other work submitted for assessment in the course.Lihat sumber rasmi ↗Dikumpulkan: 2026-10-09 · 15–18

AI is normally not permitted in on-campus examinations. Take-home examinations and papers depend on the course instructions and require accounting for permitted use. Undisclosed use may be cheating and may lead to cancellation or exclusion; the guidance does not promise those outcomes in every case.

Skop: Students in the cited programme/course/stage only · university
In written examinations on campus, the use of AI-based programs will normally not be permitted.
In take-home exams, of shorter or longer duration, the student must comply with specifications regarding the use of AI given in the individual exam paper and in the course description.
Where the use of AI is permitted for answering the exam question, the student must state which AI-based programs have been used and in what way they have been used; corresponding to the provisions on language polishing and research method in chapter 3 on Accounting for AI Use in Submitted Assignments and Other Work.
Chapter 5. Sources and References with AI-Based Literature Searches
AI-based programs can provide fictitious sources, and/or refer to non-academic sources. This applies to both conventional chatbots (ChatGPT etc.) and platforms for literature searches based on generative AI (Keenious etc.). AI-based programs for literature searches do not have access to all relevant and up-to-date academic literature. It is recommended to use sources from recognized scientific journals and databases (e.g., Web of Science, Scopus, and Econlit).
AI-based programs for literature searches can be used where nothing else is specified in the course description and in the exam paper. Such literature searches can, where permitted, only be used in addition to conventional forms of literature searches (database searches at the University Library etc.).
The student is responsible for ensuring the quality of literature proposed or generated by AI-based programs.
Chapter 6. NMBU's Regulations on Suspicion of Cheating and Plagiarism
The student is obliged to familiarize themselves with NMBU's regulations regarding cheating and plagiarism.
NMBU's regulations state that exam papers and other work must be the student's own independent work.
All use of AI to generate text or academic content must be diclosed and accounted for. Failure to do so may be considered cheating and may result in the cancellation of the exam and/or expulsion from the university.
Guidelines - handling of suspicion of cheating or other dishonest conduct at NMBU also apply to the use of AI, in particular the provisions in chapter 3 paragraph 3.1 and 3.2 (1) and (7).Lihat sumber rasmi ↗Dikumpulkan: 2026-10-09 · 35–46

Disclose AI writing and research methods. Ordinary Word or Grammarly spelling correction usually need not be accounted for, while generative rewriting of substantial text does. All assignment-related NotebookLM use counts as methodology and must be academically accounted for in the methodology chapter; this is not an unqualified spellchecking exemption.

Skop: Students in the cited programme/course/stage only · university
Ordinary spelling correction usually exempt; language assessments may differ; NotebookLM assignment use is methodology.
The student is responsible for ensuring that information generated using AI-based programs is reliable.
The student must follow academic norms of honesty, diligence, and openness, and clearly indicate how and where AI-based programs have been used.
AI-generated texts should not be the sole source of factual information. The student must critically evaluate the AI-generated results and ensure that they are based on research or other relevant literature, represented by concrete sources in the text and bibliography.
Chapter 3. Accounting for AI Use in Submitted Assignments and Other Work
If the student uses AI-based programs in a submitted assignment or in other work to be submitted for assessment or as a compulsory activity in a course, the student must account for the use, e.g., in the assignment's methodology chapter. How the use is described depends on whether AI is used as a writing aid or as a research method.
Language polishing (språkvask) and code polishing (kodevask) falls under writing support and should be described with a brief explanation of which program (e.g., Chatbot or other AI-based programs) the student has used and how the program has been used in the text. The student is responsible for the final content of the text after completed language polishing or code polishing.
Spell checking in Word and grammar programs like Grammarly do not fall under AI use and usually do not need to be accounted for. If Grammarly GO and all other AI-based programs are used to generate (or re-generate) large amounts of text, the use must be accounted for.
In courses where language skills are part of the assessment criteria, limitations may be set on the use of AI-based programs for language polishing. The student is responsible for familiarizing themselves with the course's specific provisions for the use of AI (if this is described), the provisions must be stated in the course description.
If AI is used to process data/sources in relation to each other, design analytical frameworks, or develop procedures for an experiment/project - this falls under the research method. The purpose of using AI-based programs and which and how AI-based programs are used must be accounted for. The course description may specify in more detail how the research method should be accounted for. All use of Google’s Notebook LM in work related to assignment writing counts as methodology. Such use must therefore be described in the methodology chapter and academically accounted for.”
In courses where coding/programming is part of the curriculum, the course responsible is free to define which AI-based programs are allowed. This must be specified in the course description. If the student uses AI-based programs, the student must account for which programs have been used and how they were used.Lihat sumber rasmi ↗Dikumpulkan: 2026-10-09 · 24–33

The cheating page places sanctions with the Board of Student Affairs, describes a meeting where the student can explain the incident and offers University-funded legal assistance with choice of lawyer within the legal circle. It also contains broad language-model cheating wording; retain that wording alongside the newer conditional AI guidance instead of asserting an unconditional campus AI ban.

Consequences of cheating and plagiarism
The NMBUs Board of Student Affairs decides on the sanctions to be imposed for cheating or plagiarism. The consequences that cheating can lead to exclusion from NMBU for up to a year, as well as losing the right to sit for exams at other universities and colleges in the same period. In particularly severe cases, the student may be suspended for up to two years. Your exam, paper or submission will be annulled.
Remember that the right to annul an exam, assignment or submission does not expire cf. the Norwegian Act Relating to Universities and University Colleges. This means that if cheating or plagiarism is suspected, the case can be taken up even if you have left the university. If there is a decision on cancellation, the diploma or transcript must be returned to NMBU
Although language models such as ChatGPT may not be mentioned explicitly in the guidelines for the exam, it is very clear that the answers you give must be your own work.
If you copy text from other sources, get others to write the text for you, or you use e.g. Chat GPT or other AI, this is considered attempted cheating. The result can be cancellation of the exam/course and expulsion from the university.
Using a language processing tool to generate text can currently be defined as a way of gaining an "unjustified advantage" when evaluating academic performance. You must use an independent software (with login) that is not included in NMBU's list of approved digital tools.
Processing cases regarding cheating in the NMBU's Board of Student Affairs
NMBU's definition of cheating egen definisjon har fungert siden 2012:
Cheating is any act aimed at giving the student an unwarranted study result or an unjustified advantage in evaluating the student achievement. The concept of cheating applies to the act itself.
Cheating can be met with sanctions when the criteria are met: Objective criteria for reactions (the action has been done) and subjective criteria (the degree of culpability: negligence, gross negligence or intent). The Board of Student Affairs decides cases about sanctions.
Cheating in an exam or assignment can lead to the annulment of the exam regardless of the degree of guilt. This is related to the fact that the exam result must reflect the student's own performance, and authenticity cannot be guaranteed by cheating in the assignment. Annulment also has a certain element of penalty.
The boundary between negligence and gross negligence is also the boundary for whether the student can be banned from the course for a period. This limit is assessed according to legal criteria and tradition, and here we are talking about purely sanctioning considerations.
In all cases concerning cheating, the parties are summoned to a meeting with the Board of Student Affairs . The meetings have a formal feel, which will ensure that the student speaks up and gets to explain himself about the incident and give opinions for use in the legal assessment. It is important that the student attends, as information about which the student has the best knowledge may not otherwise come to light, and the outcome of the case may be affected by a lack of contribution to clarification.
All students who are suspected of cheating are offered legal assistance, which is paid for by the university. The student has a free choice of lawyer within the legal circle, but the administration can assist with a referral if necessary. The Board of Student Affairs strongly encourages everyone who is entitled to a lawyer to make use of the offer. The Board of Student Affairs considers legal assistance in the cases to be important to ensure that the legal assessments of the student's circumstances are handled professionally, and in many cases also as support for the student during the meeting.Lihat sumber rasmi ↗Dikumpulkan: 2026-10-09 · 49–62
