Caltech IMSS states that Caltech approval of a GenAI service does not automatically constitute approval of every MCP server, agent, connector, plug-in, tool or data source available through that service. Only Caltech-approved integrations should be used to connect GenAI services to Caltech information, applications or systems, and a connection involving sensitive or restricted information should not be enabled unless the integration and intended use have been reviewed and authorized by the IRB/Research Compliance Office and Caltech Information Security.

Site conclusion text changes
Old text

All generative AI usage at Caltech should adhere to four institutional principles: prompt disclosure or referencing of GenAI tools and application plug-ins as applicable, data and information protection, content responsibility by the user, and the Caltech Honor Code. This guidance does not mandate a universal prompt-log format or tool-version record.

New text

Caltech IMSS guidance sets four guiding principles for responsible GenAI use: disclosure (disclose or acknowledge GenAI use when appropriate and follow requirements established by instructors, publishers, journals, sponsors or other applicable authorities), data and information protection (do not enter sensitive, confidential or restricted information into open or consumer GenAI tools), content responsibility (review GenAI output before relying on, sharing or distributing it), and the Caltech Honor Code. This guidance does not mandate a universal prompt-log format or tool-version record.
