Unauthorized use of ChatGPT or other Generative AI tools is considered cheating and/or plagiarism per Northwestern Academic Integrity guidelines.
All Northwestern students must comply with the academic integrity standards. AI-generated work submitted as one's own without required attribution or authorization may constitute cheating or plagiarism, subject to instructor-level rules.
University Parts A/B academic standards apply across programs; course and assignment GenAI instructions may differ. Part C procedures apply only to its listed schools; Kellogg, Feinberg and Pritzker have separate professional-school procedures. Unauthorized notes, aids or information on an examination are cheating.
Feinberg medical students must author required assignments themselves unless expressly permitted to use generative AI, and must not enter PHI into unauthorized AI systems.
Northwestern provides instructors with three course-level AI policy options: Open (GAI permitted), Conditional (GAI permitted when explicitly authorized), and Closed (GAI prohibited).

Microsoft Copilot, when signed in with a Northwestern Microsoft account, is approved for Level 2 and generally Level 3 data. Publicly available AI tools (ChatGPT, Gemini, MidJourney) may only be used with Level 1 public data.
Copilot Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot have university account protections, but permitted sensitive-data use depends on the precise tool, institutional environment, data category, and school rules. Pritzker describes some Level 3 uses; Feinberg directs minimally necessary PHI to NM Chat instead.
Feinberg MD students may upload curricular materials only to NU-protected systems requiring institutional credentials; public GenAI uploads require advance approval from Feinberg leadership or content authors, and copyright rules still apply.
Feinberg guidance identifies NM Chat accessed through Citrix/VPN as approved for minimally necessary PHI and restricts public LLMs to public Level 1 data.
Kellogg documents that provider no-training assurances do not remove restrictions on uploading confidential student data or regulated research material.
Microsoft Copilot is Northwestern's primary approved generative AI tool. All students, faculty, and staff have access to free Copilot Chat, with full Copilot for Microsoft 365 available as a paid subscription.
Microsoft Copilot Chat is Northwestern's primary general-use AI tool, accessible to students, faculty, and staff with their Northwestern account. Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium requires an additional paid license for eligible faculty and staff; tool access does not grant coursework permission.
Kellogg centrally funds defined subscriptions for eligible faculty, staff and PhD students. Its ChatGPT Business and Claude Team workspaces are distinct from personal accounts; workspace access and sensitive-data rules remain separate.
McCormick 2026–27 funds limited AI seats for eligible faculty and staff, including different Claude Enterprise and ChatGPT Business data/contract arrangements.
Northwestern IT advises against Panopto for non-public research data, even though the platform is a university service.
Feinberg medical students submitting work for publication or presentation must follow the relevant journal or organization AI-use disclosure requirements.
Part C sanctions are imposed by the enrollment school, jointly for dual-degree students, and may include warning, suspension, award restrictions, degree revocation or expulsion. First offenses do not guarantee a warning. External reporting restrictions have stated exceptions.
In Part C schools, students receive notice, an opportunity to respond and a written decision; ordinarily the initial meeting is within seven business days of receiving written notice. Reports are due within one month after the reporting person learns of the alleged incident.
University misconduct standard includes AI-generated work submitted without proper attribution; program-specific procedures are not uniform.
Provost Part C provides a written school appeal within ten business days and possible Provost review; the general provisions do not specify the counting start events.
For TGS school-level appeals, the ten-business-day period is expressed from the Associate Dean written decision in IV.A, while IV.D separately uses initial notification for finality.
Northwestern recommended instructors add AI-smart-glasses restrictions to syllabi for Fall 2026, but this communication itself is guidance rather than a universally enacted ban.
Northwestern staff and faculty should use approved data-protection agreements and security-reviewed tools before uploading grades, student work, or evaluations for AI grading.
