Unauthorized use of ChatGPT or other Generative AI tools is considered cheating and/or plagiarism per Northwestern Academic Integrity guidelines.
All Northwestern students must comply with the academic integrity standards. AI-generated work submitted as one's own without required attribution or authorization may constitute cheating or plagiarism, subject to instructor-level rules.
University Parts A/B academic standards apply across programs; course and assignment GenAI instructions may differ. Part C procedures apply only to its listed schools; Kellogg, Feinberg and Pritzker have separate professional-school procedures. Unauthorized notes, aids or information on an examination are cheating.
Feinberg medical students must author required assignments themselves unless expressly permitted to use generative AI, and must not enter PHI into unauthorized AI systems.
Northwestern provides instructors with three course-level AI policy options: Open (GAI permitted), Conditional (GAI permitted when explicitly authorized), and Closed (GAI prohibited).

Copilot Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot have university account protections, but permitted sensitive-data use depends on the precise tool, institutional environment, data category, and school rules. Pritzker describes some Level 3 uses; Feinberg directs minimally necessary PHI to NM Chat instead.
Feinberg MD students may upload curricular materials only to NU-protected systems requiring institutional credentials; public GenAI uploads require advance approval from Feinberg leadership or content authors, and copyright rules still apply.
Feinberg guidance identifies NM Chat accessed through Citrix/VPN as approved for minimally necessary PHI and restricts public LLMs to public Level 1 data.

Part C sanctions are imposed by the enrollment school, jointly for dual-degree students, and may include warning, suspension, award restrictions, degree revocation or expulsion. First offenses do not guarantee a warning. External reporting restrictions have stated exceptions.
