The teaching policy says GenAI use does not automatically constitute academic misconduct, but may do so where explicitly prohibited by the lecturer or Course Co-ordinator. The appropriate use varies by discipline and task; a general policy does not override higher-level rules.

Syarat dan pengecualian

Explicit task restrictions and higher-level inconsistency rule.

Assessment and Academic Integrity (28) Forming trustworthy judgements about student learning in a time of GenAI requires multiple, inclusive, and contextualised approaches to assessment. (29) Assessment should emphasise security at meaningful points across a program. (30) The use of GenAI in assessment will be informed by the Principles of Conduct section outlined in the Staff Code of Conduct and Student Code of Conduct. (31) The use of GenAI does not automatically constitute academic misconduct. However, it may constitute academic misconduct where the use of GenAI has been explicitly prohibited by lecturers and/or Course Co-ordinators. (32) The University will: maintain an open dialogue with staff and students regarding the acceptable use of GenAI in assessment; encourage discipline specific approaches to addressing the risks to academic integrity posed by GenAI; and support staff to enact necessary assessment changes resulting from the increasing access to, and sophistication of, GenAI.

Ethical Framework (7) In the event of any inconsistency between this policy and any higher-level policy document, the higher-level document prevails to the extent of the inconsistency. Top of Page Section 4 - Scope (8) This Policy applies to all students or staff who engage in teaching, learning and assessment activities that may involve GenAI. Top of Page Section 5 - Audience (9) The Policy should be read and understood by all: students at the University in all modes of study, including undergraduate students and postgraduate coursework students; and staff involved in the design and delivery of coursework courses and programs and who support student learning.

Copyright permissions remain necessary: university-owned course/Canvas material may only enter university-endorsed systems, currently Copilot. Public online availability alone does not authorise uploading third-party material; relevant licences, fair-dealing/examination exceptions and other restrictions must be checked.

Skop: Students in the cited programme/course/stage only · university

Syarat dan pengecualian

No blanket licence to upload third-party or course materials.

Students have a responsibility to be copyright compliant in their use of materials at the University, including with genAI (per the University's Copyright Compliance Policy). Uploading copyright materials to genAI without an appropriate licence or permission to do so can infringe copyright where there isn't an exception for this use in Australia's copyright legislation. It is your responsibility to confirm that you are able to upload, or otherwise include, copyright materials as part of genAI prompts. Data security When uploading materials to genAI, be aware that not all tools are the same. Many tools take user prompts and materials and turn them into training data for their systems. This means that your work could end up being used in an output for someone else, possibly even verbatim. This is why data security is important for both your work and other copyright materials. See the accordion for The importance of data security and privacy above for more information. Coursework + assessment Your use of materials with genAI in coursework and assessments may be covered by either a fair dealing exception or the educational statutory licence. Either way, there are restrictions around what and how much you may be able to use, plus limitations on what genAI tools can be used. University-owned materials, including course/Canvas materials, can only be uploaded into systems endorsed by the Univerity (currently only Microsoft Copilot). See the accordions for fair dealing, the educational statutory licence, and University-owned materials above for more information. It's also important to check out the accordions for using your own materials and data security. General use Other uses with genAI may be covered by options such as a licensing/subscription agreement for publisher databases, open licensing like Creative Commons, or permissions granted by a copyright owner. At least some restrictions will likely apply to these options. Do not assume that just because something is openly available online that you can use it with genAI. See the accordions for publisher subscription agreements, Creative Commons, and permissions above for more information.

Research and teaching policies separated.

Top of Page Section 7 - Guidance for the writing process (16) Despite challenges and risks, Gen AI can significantly enhance the reporting of research work if used responsibly. It can be used to enhance the linguistic quality of a submission, such as improving grammatical accuracy, correcting typographical errors, enhancing formatting, ensuring clarity etc. The following should be considered: Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies should only be used in the writing process to improve the readability and language of the manuscript The technology should always be applied with human oversight and control and authors should carefully review and edit the result, as AI can generate authoritative-sounding output that can be incorrect, incomplete, or biased Authors are ultimately responsible and accountable for the contents of the work Authors must not list or cite AI and AI-assisted technologies as an author or co-author on the manuscript since authorship implies responsibilities and tasks that can only be attributed to and performed by humans Researchers should declare the use of generative AI in all scientific writing and outputs. Top of Page Section 8 - Guidance for the use of AI to analyse and draw insights from data (17) GenAI may be used in certain scenarios to stimulate critical or creative thinking by providing new insights or perspectives. Under appropriate circumstances, GenAI tools can assist with the analysis of large amounts of non-sensitive data, saving time from a procedure requiring manual analysis. It is not a replacement for the level of critical thinking, reflexivity and contextual understanding required for robust qualitative work. (18) Researchers should never use data created by GenAI in the scientific process, for example falsifying, altering or manipulating original research data. (19) Researchers should be transparent in their use of AI tools. This includes details regarding which AI tools have been used and when, how they were used, and the effect their use had on the research process. Input (prompts) and outputs should be retained to provide where relevant in line with open science principles. Top of Page Section 9 - Guidance for peer review (20) Gen AI should never be used to perform peer review activities due to the risk of unfair assessment that may arise from the tool’s limitations such as hallucinations and bias. Moreover, it safeguards the unpublished work from potential security exposure.

Equitable Access (17) The University will facilitate access to GenAI in a way that promotes fairness and inclusivity. (18) Staff should: consider fair and equitable student access in the design and delivery of all learning activities that involve the use of GenAI, taking particular care to avoid the use of subscription or paid services; and provide suitable alternative arrangements should limited access to GenAI disadvantage student(s) in the completion of an assessment that explicitly requires the use of GenAI. (19) Students should follow the direction of Course Co-ordinators regarding the use of specific GenAI in courses.

Students have free enterprise Copilot access through university login. The Library also describes SWIFT feedback as data-safe and usable even where assessments forbid GenAI, because it guides improvement rather than changing submitted work. This specific SWIFT distinction does not authorise other generative editing.

Recommended genAI tools The University provides free enterprise access to Microsoft Copilot for students. When logged in through the University, students receive data security that covers anything shared with Copilot, whether in a prompt or uploaded as an attachment. This can provide greater certainty around uploading your own work. Students wishing to get feedback on their assessments can also use the University's Student Writing Improvement Feedback Tool (SWIFT). It's also data-safe and can be used even where assessments don't allow for use of genAI. This is because it generates guidance for where you can improve your submission and doesn't make changes to your work the way some other tools like GrammarlyGo can.
