A clear misuse of GenAI - where any output was largely generated by GenAI and you were not transparent about using the tool - can be considered an irregularity under Article 84 of the Education and Examination Regulations (OER).

Responsible use of generative Artificial Intelligence

Always check the description of the assignment to see whether the use of GenAI is allowed. Apart from the guidelines for students on the authorised use, a teaching staff member, a programme or your faculty may decide not to allow a particular use of GenAI, based on the specific learning goals. If there is no further explanation in the assignment or from the programme in terms of guidelines for GenAI use, then these university-wide guidelines apply.

Please read the general guidelines and basic principles about responsible use of GenAI. The guidelines on this webpage apply to the whole university. Where necessary, the teaching staff member, study programme or faculty may deviate from this or provide additional information on whether or not the use of GenAI is allowed. For instance in assignments (visual, writing and programming assignments). This is related to the learning goals of the course. For example, if the goal of the assignment is “academic writing” or “translation”, the use of GenAI tools may be prohibited.

There are numerous indicators that may point out that a student used GenAI. This entails indicators concerning form as well as content specific to how GenAI works. Be aware that you can always be asked to explain how you created (certain parts of) an assignment. It is therefore also advisable to document the creation of your work as much as possible (for instance, by keeping interim versions). Examination committees can also ask you to discuss the assignment you submitted. This will give you a chance to shed more light on how you used GenAI. After all, correct use of GenAI and being able to explain it is an essential part of acting with scientific integrity.

Any form of copy-pasting of any content generated by GenAI without fully acknowledging the source (citing, referencing). Any use of GenAI that prevents the teaching staff member from checking and/or assessing your skills. Using synthetic data unethically to manipulate research. Any use of GenAI during on-campus examinations or other forms of assessment when the teaching staff have indicated that the use of GenAI is not allowed.

In the Code of Conduct (see Downloads), you will find, based on the general guidelines and the five key principles, when you may use GenAI and under which conditions, unless your lecturer, programme, or faculty explicitly states that its use is not permitted for your assignment, course, or programme (for the purpose of achieving specific learning outcomes).

Note! When your master's thesis is under embargo, you should be very careful about using AI. After all, any information you enter - for instance, asking the tool to improve the writing of a piece of text - is stored by these systems and can thus be circulated to other users. This is definitely not allowed. If there is an embargo, and you are considering using GenAI, always contact your supervisor first.
