HKUST academic-integrity regulations cover unauthorized assistance in assessment and fabricated facts or references, including when caused by AI use; there is no evidence that merely detecting AI text independently establishes misconduct.

Under HKUST exam-condition rules, electronic and communication devices, including AI-enabled smart glasses, must be placed beyond access unless expressly permitted; thesis and final-year-project assessments are excluded from these rules.

Students facing misconduct reports are informed of the allegation and can respond and present evidence. Possible sanctions include reduced assessment marks or failed grades, while certain repeat-offence sanctions normally apply.

Appeals against Head or Dean academic-misconduct sanctions go to the Provost within 14 calendar days of the dated written notification; appeals against Senate SDC decisions go to the President within 14 calendar days of the dated written communication.

For the 2026-27 academic year, course-grade review requests go to the Head in writing within 10 working days of grade release, a fee applies, accepted reviews are arranged within 15 working days of grade release and the result may lower a grade.

Appeal a course-grade-review decision to the School/AIS Dean within 10 working days after receipt of the departmental decision; appeals generally require procedural irregularity or justified new evidence. This is separate from misconduct appeals.

HKUST CEI recommends designing assessments that account for GenAI instead of relying solely on AI-text detectors; the guidance is not an institutional ban on detectors.

For courses starting Fall 2023-24, instructors set their own GenAI policy and must communicate the selected option to students in writing.

HKUST Library warns that uploading complete copyrighted journal articles or book chapters to generative AI generally violates many publisher licences, subject to the actual material licence and permitted use.
