Unless the faculty regulates it, the course director decides which AI tools/uses and times are permitted. The course catalogue should state the choice before class starts; students remain responsible for errors/missing citations. A required teaching tool should be accessible free of charge; this is not a free campus account promise for every product.

Voorwaarden en uitzonderingen

Faculty rules or course-director decision, stated in course catalogue.

As a teacher, to what extent can I decide for myself which AI tools are permitted in my teaching and examinations and which are prohibited? Unless specifically regulated by the faculty, responsibility lies with the course director. They can decide what is and what is not permitted in their course and at what time. In the case of courses with examinations, the use of AI could be permitted for certain work assignments, for example. In any case, students are responsible for any errors generated by AI (including missing citations). In any case, clear and transparent communication with students is important. Students should also be able to talk about their previous experiences of using AI tools in their studies in courses and thus contribute to the discourse and an informed approach. If students are asked to use AI in courses, care should be taken to ensure that the recommended tools are accessible and usable for everyone (free of charge). I’m a student. How do I know whether the use of AI tools is permitted in a course? Whether students are permitted to use generative AI tools in a course, and if so which ones, should be specified in the course description in the course catalogue before the course begins. I’m a student. How do I know if I’m allowed to use KI-tools in an exam? Permitted aids (including AI tools) in examinations must be explicitly stated by the course coordinator at the start of the course – ideally in the course catalogue before the course begins; any aids not mentioned are prohibited. Should unauthorised aids nevertheless be used, this shall be regarded as an attempt at cheating. AI and research Is it allowed to use AI tools? Yes, of course, the general principles and standards of good scientific practice must be observed. How should I label the use of AI tools? When using AI tools, the guidelines for good scientific practice apply at the University of Innsbruck. The basic principles of transparency and traceability of the generated knowledge must also be ensured when using generative AI models. Therefore, any use of AI tools (name of the tool, scope of use, purpose of use) in the writing of scientific papers must be cited in the appropriate place. Texts, tables, images, videos, software codes, data sets, etc. generated by generative AI must be transparently identified. However, the AI source should not be cited as the author, as AI cannot be considered a scientific source and copyright issues arise.

The FAQ forbids personal or copyright-protected data in freely accessible AI and recommends University-licensed privacy-compliant tools. That recommendation does not itself approve every dataset or show that a student can access the staff service.

Who owns the output of AI generators? Firstly, the output of a system does not give rise to a copyright for the system itself, as European copyright laws are based on a human act of creation, the realisation of which results in the creation of a work worthy of protection. An AI system is not human and therefore not a sufficient creator. In principle, the system manufacturer also does not establish any copyright in the system output, as it is not sufficiently creative in its creation process. Finally, the user may be entitled to a copyright in the output if they have merely used the AI system as a tool in their creative process. It is disputed whether this is already the case if the user selects a particularly creative prompt, or whether the user must also use the output, such as creating a collage from various AI-generated outputs. What legal considerations do I need to bear in mind when using AI tools? Personal data or copyright-protected data must not be entered into freely accessible AI tools; it is recommended that you use tools licensed by the University of Innsbruck that comply with data protection regulations, currently Academic AI.

The FAQ describes staff AcademicAI with a secure no-training environment and €20 monthly token credit, with other licences possibly charged to department/project budgets. It separately expressly prohibits staff Copilot because it says the institutional privacy agreement is absent. These are institution-specific source assertions, not a verified Microsoft-wide behavior claim or student access.

Does the University of Innsbruck offer AI tools? The University of Innsbruck offers its current staff a chatbot based on OpenAI technology, as well as a document analysis tool. The model runs in a secure environment and the data entered is not used for training purposes. The service is available at https://uibk.academic-ai.at/. Full details on how to use the service can be found on the website of the Department of Digital Media and Learning Technologies. At the University of Innsbruck, the Microsoft 365 package includes the AI tool CoPilot, which cannot be technically disabled. As CoPilot is not part of the university’s overall package, there are no agreements with Microsoft regarding the protection of personal data. Among other things, data processing may take place outside Europe, and all input into CoPilot is used by Microsoft to train the model. For data protection reasons, all staff members are therefore expressly prohibited from using CoPilot. Does the University of Innsbruck recommend the use of certain AI tools? The University of Innsbruck recommends the use of the in-house AI model Academic AI. The model runs in a secure environment and the data entered is not used for training purposes. All information about the service can be found on the homepage of the eCampus of the e-learning department at the ZID. You can find futher information on AI tools for teaching and research on this blogpost at the Crashkurs E-Didaktik in OLAT run by the e-learning department at the ZID (only available in German). Who pays the licence fees for the use of fee-based AI products? The University of Innsbruck makes the in-house modell Academic AI available to its employees free of charge with a credit of tokens worth €20 per month. Beyond this, there is no central assumption of costs for the use of other AI tools by the university. However, any license fees can be paid from institute, project or department budgets.
