Freie Universität Berlin presents its current Eckpunkte document as the binding orientation framework for responsible AI use in study and teaching.
For AI use in teaching, Freie Universität Berlin recommends its centrally provided, regulation-compliant KI.Assist@FU access, especially when students are required to use AI; whether and how AI is used remains at the discretion of the respective instructors.
For exams, FU's Eckpunkte state that using AI tools that are not expressly permitted is treated as unauthorized aid or deception about independent performance; when AI tools are permitted, their use must be marked and documented.
Freie Universität Berlin describes KI.Assist@FU as its central data-protection-compliant chatbot for study and teaching, available free to FU members through single sign-on; the chatbot page says entered data is not used to train the models.
The KI.Assist@FU terms prohibit use of the chatbot to process personal data and exclude use for correcting or evaluating student work or otherwise assessing students' abilities and knowledge.
When AI tools are used in teaching and student use is planned, FU's Eckpunkte say the AI use must be clearly communicated and students must be informed about the tools' function and risks.
For students using AI, FU's Eckpunkte prohibit uploading copyrighted or personal content into AI systems and state that KI.Assist@FU may be used only for university purposes.
For exams, FU's Eckpunkte urgently advise against mandatory AI use for the time being and state that automated AI assessment of learning outcomes and exams is prohibited until further notice; AI may at most support preparation, with the examiner retaining the final assessment decision.
For AI use in study contexts, FU's Eckpunkte require students to inform themselves about applicable AI-use rules and advise them to consult instructors in advance when the permissibility or scope of use is unclear.
