Stanford BCA guidance treats generative AI like assistance from another person when an instructor has not stated a policy. Using AI to substantially complete an assignment or exam is not permitted in that default context. Students should acknowledge non-incidental AI use and disclose when in doubt. Instructors may set course policies.

新文本

Stanford BCA's “Generative AI Policy Guidance for Academic Use” (page note: “Guidance adopted on October 15, 2026”) sets a default course AI policy that applies when an instructor has not provided course- or assignment-specific AI policies in writing. Under it, students may use generative AI to practise and prepare, support learning and comprehension, and for surface-level editing that does not materially alter the substance of the work; those uses need not be disclosed. Students may not use AI to create deliverables, to replace engaging with course materials, or to act as a proxy for themselves or others, and must document and disclose any other coursework-related AI use. The page also says that, upon formal adoption by the BCA, this guidance is intended to replace the February 2023 guidance.

Stanford's interim Proctoring Guidance states that remote proctoring, whether by software or by a human proctor connecting via the internet, is strongly discouraged; the AI Working Group's charge excluded remote proctoring and there is currently no recommended guidance for it. The guidance is interim: the BCA approved the Stanford Proctoring Bylaw on May 22, 2026, and it is under consideration by the Faculty Senate, Undergraduate Senate, Graduate Student Council and University President.

Stanford's BCA issued guidance on generative AI use, and the Office of Community Standards recommends that instructors give advance notice to students when using AI detection software.

新文本

Stanford BCA's October 2026 generative AI guidance (noted as adopted on October 15, 2026, and intended to replace the February 2023 guidance upon formal adoption by the BCA) states that AI detection tools are not currently used at Stanford, including in evaluating student work. It expects instructors to communicate all AI policies at a minimum in the course syllabus, lets instructors set their own course and assignment AI rules, and expects instructors to disclose their own use of AI tools in their courses, particularly when giving feedback to students.
