}Previous baseline and review records- CL-003 — Princeton's Generative AI Tools Use Policy (last updated August 2026) governs Princeton administrative and operational information, including student, financial and HR information; it expressly excludes information used for research, academic or instructional purposes. Under it, only University-licensed generative AI tools should be used with University Information classified as Internal or Confidential, publicly available generative AI tools may not be used with such information, and even University-licensed tools should not be used with Restricted information. It is not a blanket rule covering all student coursework or research data.
- CL-001 — Princeton's Rights, Rules, Responsibilities (2.4) states that generative AI is not a source; where an instructor permits generative AI, students must disclose its use rather than cite or acknowledge it. Disclosure of permitted use is therefore required, not merely recommended, while whether AI may be used at all is set by the course or department. Scholarly Integrity guidance says failure to disclose, even in a course where AI is permitted, is a scholarly integrity violation, and offers a disclosure template.
- CL-002 — Princeton's Rights, Rules, Responsibilities states that students must adhere to course and departmental generative AI policies, and that inappropriate uses on work submitted for an academic requirement - directly copying output, representing AI output as their own (including rewording or paraphrasing it), exceeding the instructor's parameters, or failing to disclose use (including use for rewording, paraphrasing or editing) - constitute academic integrity violations.
- CL-007 — Princeton's Dean of the College stated in the Fall 2023 memo that the decision to allow, limit or prohibit generative AI in a course or in undergraduate independent work remains with the faculty. This is consistent with current course-procedure guidance requiring faculty to state their expectations in the syllabus; the 2023 memo is historical context rather than the current governing text.
- CL-004 — Princeton's Office of the Dean of the College requires faculty to set clear expectations for whether, when and how generative AI can be used and to state them in the course syllabus; all students are expected to disclose their generative AI use and not pass off AI-generated content as their own, and faculty may provide their own disclosure template or use the standard one.
- CL-005 — Princeton's McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning recommends against using AI detection tools to determine whether students have violated an instructor's AI policy. This is teaching guidance, not a disciplinary evidence rule.
- CL-008 — Princeton OIT guidance says not to use non-public Princeton data in public generative AI tools, and that University Information classified as Restricted must not be used with any AI tool. University-licensed tools listed by OIT have passed Architecture & Security Review and carry contractual protections; as defined in the policy, 'University Information' means administrative and operational information.
- cl-princeton-university-adobe-firefly-175 — Princeton OIT's current Princeton-supported AI Tools directory lists Adobe Creative Cloud Image Generation: Faculty, students and staff; no request necessary; Cost column: No. Approved for Public, Internal and Confidential data, not Restricted. The directory's Cost column (Yes/No) indicates whether a cost applies, not a specific personal price. Directory listing is not permission to use the tool in a course assessment.
- cl-princeton-university-gemini-176 — Princeton OIT's current Princeton-supported AI Tools directory lists Google Gemini Workspace+: Faculty and those they sponsor; access by request; Cost column: Yes. Not listed for students generally. Approved for Public, Internal and Confidential data, not Restricted. The directory's Cost column (Yes/No) indicates whether a cost applies, not a specific personal price. Directory listing is not permission to use the tool in a course assessment.
- cl-princeton-university-github-copilot-177 — Princeton OIT's current Princeton-supported AI Tools directory lists GitHub Copilot: Faculty and those they sponsor; access by request; Cost column: Yes. Approved for Public, Internal and Confidential data, not Restricted. The directory's Cost column (Yes/No) indicates whether a cost applies, not a specific personal price. Directory listing is not permission to use the tool in a course assessment.
- cl-princeton-university-institutional-ai-service-178 — Princeton OIT's current Princeton-supported AI Tools directory lists AI Sandbox for Faculty Research: Faculty and those they sponsor, for research with faculty sponsorship; access by request; Cost column: Yes. Approved for Public, Internal and Confidential data, not Restricted. The directory's Cost column (Yes/No) indicates whether a cost applies, not a specific personal price. Directory listing is not permission to use the tool in a course assessment.
- cl-princeton-university-microsoft-copilot-179 — Princeton OIT's current Princeton-supported AI Tools directory lists Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (Basic): Faculty, students and staff; no request necessary; Cost column: No. Approved for Public, Internal and Confidential data, not Restricted. The directory's Cost column (Yes/No) indicates whether a cost applies, not a specific personal price. Directory listing is not permission to use the tool in a course assessment.
- cl-princeton-university-microsoft-copilot-for-m365-180 — Princeton OIT's current Princeton-supported AI Tools directory lists Microsoft 365 Copilot (Premium): Faculty only; access by request; Cost column: Yes. Approved for Public, Internal and Confidential data, not Restricted. The directory's Cost column (Yes/No) indicates whether a cost applies, not a specific personal price. Directory listing is not permission to use the tool in a course assessment.

It is not listed for students generally.
- draft-claim-princeton-ai-tutoring-bots — Princeton's Rights, Rules, Responsibilities (2.4.5), as quoted by Scholarly Integrity, provides that undergraduates may use only Princeton-authorized academic support: when completing any work to fulfil an academic requirement (homework, problem sets, quizzes or examinations), undergraduates may not use non-Princeton tutoring resources, including AI tutoring bots. This applies to work done for academic requirements; it is not a ban on all AI-assisted study.
- draft-claim-princeton-art-archaeology-independent-work — Princeton's Department of Art and Archaeology prohibits using AI as a text-generation tool in coursework, final examinations and independent projects: students may not submit AI-generated text, use AI-generated text as a draft they then modify or paraphrase, or use generative AI to edit and revise their work. Instructors may grant exceptions for a course assignment with written disclosure, but exceptions will never be made for the junior paper or senior thesis. This department rule is stricter than general course-by-course permission.
- draft-claim-princeton-genai-procurement-asr — Under Princeton's Generative AI Tools Use Policy, anyone considering procuring a generative AI tool, or whose existing IT tool gains generative AI capabilities, must first schedule an Architecture & Security Review (ASR); tools endorsed through ASR then go through Procurement/OIT contract review.
