The University of Edinburgh's student guidance (revision of 26 October 2026) states that all students have free access to ELM and that students should use ELM because it keeps data secure – it will not be used by third-party services to train their models or for any other purpose – and it is free for all staff and students. Another published entitlement page states that access is subject to discretionary School approval. Whether that approval condition still applies universally is not established by these sources.
